Conoce tus Derechos · Know Your Rights

Your rights exist right now, regardless of status.

These four rights belong to every person in this country. Print this page. Save it in your phone. Share it with your family.

You can stay silent

Puedes guardar silencio

You do not have to answer questions about where you were born, how you entered the country, or your immigration status. Say: "I am exercising my right to remain silent."

You can refuse entry

Puedes negar la entrada

Do not open your door. Officers need a warrant signed by a judge — not ICE — to enter your home. Ask them to slide it under the door.

You have the right to a lawyer

Tienes derecho a un abogado

If detained, say clearly: "I want to speak to a lawyer." You have the right to make phone calls. Call Raíces immediately.

Do not sign anything

No firmes nada

Never sign immigration documents without speaking to a lawyer first. Signing may give up your rights to a hearing or appeal.

María, mother of three — Queens, NY

"My husband had been detained for nine months. Raíces helped us understand every step. They never made us feel ashamed for needing help."

Claudette, nurse — Brooklyn, NY
Reunited after 9 months.

"I was afraid to open the door. After the know-your-rights workshop, I knew exactly what to say. My children watched me stand my ground."
